Can I just ask what is up with the people who take up half of the four track lanes with their plyometrics workout and equipment.  Got smacked in the head by a guy doing jumps as I passed by today.  I really think they should take that to one of the dance rooms or the gym...track get's pretty tough to negotiate with that and several people walking and a few runners.  Had to come to a stop a few times today.  All the more reason to be outside I guess.  :)

You blog, now I have to be careful what I say about other runners at the rec center. ;o) And i guess I better be careful when I workout in the corner of the track (I do totally stay out of people's way, I promise).

Seriously, I do not get how you run so long on the track! If you are ever curious how fast you are going, ask me. I try to match your pace from the TM to figure it out. You haul.

Great workout today, BTW. You were flying. I have never in my life done mile repeats, and I do not think I ever will. I am a total wimp.

You should join us on some of the Saturday runs, it looks like we run in the same places anyway. LOVE the Corridor, great hill work!

From Wilkerk on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 23:38:32 from 209.20.119.245

Eh...don't let me stop you from being honest about the gym rats!! I don't expect to be running the track nearly as often as it gets light earlier in the AM...oh and warms up a bit.

I'm just amazed at the miles you are able to put on! That's where I'd like to get if my old man legs can't take it. I pack a lot of weight around :) literally!

Yes...I too really enjoy the Corridore...will be sad to see traffic on it, but maybe the trails will still be good.

Corridore would be the perfect place for a big group run...lots of room and no traffic!

From Kelli on Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 06:48:31 from 71.219.85.126

We had one big group run on the Corridor a while ago and Bill (the spin instructor) came with my husband and I two weeks ago. I really think they should keep it closed just for me. ;o)

I can run all day, just not fast. It is my super power. Everyone has one, right?

From RAD on Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 10:32:18 from 98.202.23.178

Is this my Stake running friend? I think it is! How come I never see you at the Gym anymore? Between you and Kelli I'd have someone to chat with, but then you both have been standing me up lately :)

Talking about the gym rats is the best thing to do! How come I didn't know you were on the blog?!? I know you haven't been here long, but dang it! I always need new blogging friends - more time to waste through the day.

You and Kelli are both ridiculously fast. I'm the slow one! Nice job on those repeats - they are killer fast! Excellent :)

I really want to run 10-12 on the corridor this Saturday (tomorrow), maybe 7 or 8ish. If you're game I may be able to find a few people to join in. Kelli is going to be enriching her education and won't be able to join us :) I know it isn't a very long 'long' run, but I'm trying....

Oh, this is Rachel by the way :)

must've gotten to sleep in today! I didn't see you when I was there - waaay too early! Nice job, that track is better than a TM most days.

We are meeting at the Rec center at 7:30 then running to Monarch Meadows to jump on the corridor there. If you and Scott are out and want to join us, I always enjoy a little company!

From Wilkerk on Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 22:45:34 from 67.172.231.174

Yes, slept in a little today...got there around 7. I've been there every day this week around 6-6:30.

We are going just a bit later around 8:30...after the sun is up! :) Enjoy the run...I take it the foot is feeling good if your running 12 miles! That's great!

What a glorious windy morning on the Corridor!! Wind aided on the way out...and power running on the way back!  Totally killed our pace and it was chilly!  We diverted off the Corridor on the way back and ran up a ravine on a trail/road to escape the wind...what an adventure.  Nice mud all over Scott's new NB Minumus shoes...slip sliding around, but it felt so good to be out of the wind for a few minutes!

You are going to kick some butt in your race next weekend. You are fast. BU-BYE to that 45:39 from last year.

  • Checkin on Friday was smooth...not too busy around 6 when we got there
  • Shirts are a HUGE improvement over last year...They listened!!!
  • Last years shirts were a waste of money...abrasive rough material...wore it once, but never for a workout
  • This year good material and festively green with a shamrock for the St. Patrick's day run
  • weather was NICE at the bus loading in Ivins - 50s
  • Bussed to the start about an hour ahead of start time a bit windy and cooler in Snow Canyon...but wasn't at all worried once we get started it wouldn't matter.
  • Scott and I sat with Rachel on the bus ride up
  • Met up with Shyla, Jen B, Jenn P, Steve and Becky
  • Scott and I stretched then did a little 1+ mile run up the hill and back to the start
  • Little more wind and cool...time to get going!  Sprinkle or two of rain drops...but it didn't really ever rain
  • Start!  first mile was much faster than i expected, but felt good since we'd had a little warm up run
  • Kept Scott in my sights the entire race...couldn't really ever close on him, but gave me something to shoot for.
  • Finish line was WELL stocked!  Fruit essentials, organges, bananas, gatorade, water, chocolate milk, ice cream (yum), peanuts, fruit chews, cheese...well stocked!  Great job!
  • Took some pictures (see them on Picasa - https://picasaweb.google.com/115600783645776155656/2012Spectrum10k?authuser=0&feat=directlink ) cheered on the Jen's, Shyla, Becky and others.
  • Scott 2nd in 40-44 age group 23rd overall
  • I was 3rd in the 45-49 age group 30th overall
  • a New PR!!!
  • 41:56  Better than the 43-42 i was shooting for!
  • AP 6:45
  • Splits
    • 6:12 - feeling good!
    • 6:46 - still feeling good
    • 6:40 - I can do this!
    • 6:48 - okay...only 2.2 to go
    • 7:04 - Some of the uphills - started to feel them a bit :)
    • 7:16 - Hang in there!
    • 5:38 - final .2 with sprint to the finish...never fails there's someone there to push you at the end :)
  • Nice Shamrock cystal trophy for age division 3rd place
  • No medals this year...again I think the race directors listened
  • Rachel also placed in her division...see the picasa photos mentioned above
  • Shower, clean up, eat at 5gusy then blast on home!
  • Great day!

Congrats! I take it that you are the guy from Rachel's stake. Very nice job on your race! Agreed, the shirts were better this year but I have yet to get one from this race (or the SG Half) that actually fits. Oh well, one step at a time I suppose.

Congrats again! :-)

From Wilkerk on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 21:14:19 from 67.172.231.174

Yes, that is me :) and you are right they always seem to have a hard time with sizes...different manufacturers and they just aren't consistent. They did seem pretty willing to exchange and let people put them on this time.

Run on TM!

From Teena Marie on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 21:21:02 from 174.27.198.157

Sadly that was one of the problems: I ordered x-small but by the time my SIL got there to pick up our packets (Friday evening) they had let others exchange their larger shirts for the x-smalls and so they didn't have any left (even for the runners who registered wanting an x-small). Funny!

But you are definitely right about the discrepancies in size differences between varying companies. :)

From RAD on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 21:50:29 from 98.202.23.178

Nice work Kim! You did a great job on that race, and it makes me feel better that my 5-6 mile pace was my slowest too. Those last couple miles are deceivingly rough, especially compared to the killer downhill at the beginning! Too bad you didn't have a bullet point *running scared that Rachel would pass me at any moment. That would've been sweet :) Next year boy, next year!

From Wilkerk on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 21:57:54 from 67.172.231.174

Fair enough...once I passed you I didn't DARE look back for fear you were breathing down my neck! :) Thanks for the motivation Rachel! And Congratulations to you on a fine race as well!

OH, dang! I totally forgot you ran this race. I would have already read this so I could congratulate you today while we ran silently next to each other on the TM. (You know I have a reputation for being the most serious runner at that place, no one dares to talk to me aside from Rachel.)

CONGRATULATIONS on that new PR! I had not doubts you would get it, you fly on that track and treadmill. Now, time to get back to work and PR in the other distances, right?

Oh, and I had no idea you were that old! ;o) Cool trophy for the age groups. I want one!

That was my quick post today as I hurried to pack and get on my way to the airport to fly to Houston. Sad hong is I'm still at the airport waiting! Flight delayed over 3 hours...so far.

Yes that inspiring and driving lady next to me kept me going today. ;). Ya that one...the training maniac! Keep it up! Are you shooting to go under 3 hrs this year? Maybe you already have.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 19:02:42 from 71.219.85.126

BUMMER, nothing worse than sitting at an airport! If only they had a track around the outside or a treadmill to hang out on!

No sub 3 is ever in the works for me. TOO HARD. I would be happy with a 3:03. That has always been my marathon goal. It seems random, yet it is not!

Hated to not get any in today...thought I might get a PM run in on Tuesday evening...but spent all afternoon and night in the airport (delayed 3 hours) and flying to Houston.

Taught Powered by People class for 16 of my Zions Bancorp TOPS teammates in Houston all day today.  They rocked it of course!  Then spent the evening in the airport again and flying home...flight delayed...again!  didn't get home till 1AM.

Kelli you were right...they need a track in the airports!  And showers!

Anyone who sees this...pass this along to your running friends.  A friend of mine at work has a 4 month old Garmin 610 that he wants to sell to upgrade to the new Suunto Ambit or Garmin 910xt.  610 is the touchscreen model...very nice...he wants $275 for it.  Let me know if anyone has interest.  Check out the watch on one of my favorite review sites ever!!!

You dare to run on the corridor while they are working? Do they yell at you? I have never dared!

Hope your foot feels better soon! Get that coke bottle, those ridges help! If you need one, I will gladly go drink a coke (diet) for you! And not more flip flops for a bit!

Sorry I chatted your ear off. You really could have put your ear phones back in, I would not have been offended! I am one of those people that is uncomfortable with silence, so if i am not plugged in, I talk away!!!

From Wilkerk on Thu, Apr 05, 2012 at 14:07:07 from 207.14.148.51

No yelling...I just wave at them...and stay out of the way of course :) Only had a few trucks pass me the entire time so it doesn't seem to impact them or me much.

I'll get the coke bottle with ridges! Chatting was great! Didn't want to get a public reprimand for not being social! ;) Have a great day Kelli!

OH, but I never mention your name when I say you do not talk!

BTW, do you know I have a reputation at the rec center for being the "mean" lady on the treadmill who refuses to talk? No lie. People think I am way too serious and in to myself. ;o) Of course, if they talked to me they would see that all I can do is talk about myself (and running), so they might be right!

The heel is doing much better. Not pain free, but better. Of course I haven't been putting any signifcant distances on it so I don't have a lot of confidence in how the foot or the rest of me will hold up. Two days and I'll find out!

Well, not sure how you feel about drugs, but I told you I ran St George with major PF issues (not healed in any way) and i just dosed up on so much Ibuprofen I could barely notice it. I did it for 3 weeks before when I finally had to put in some training. ;o) The foot held up through the race.

You had some great training before. So, while it may not be all you had hoped for, I think you will surprise yourself with how much of it kicks back in.

Heel pain from hell. That is what we will call it. ;o)

Went with Scott to go up Rose Canyon Road via Butterfield Parkway...but were stopped at The Cove as the evacuation restrctictions haven't been lifted yet.  Surprises me a bit...can only see on smoldering hot spot and UPD policeman says its still at 15% containment. ??

Anyway we figured that might be the case so we turned around and went out the Mtn View Corridor.

Thanks Rachel! You are right...i'm either carrying water or dropping in these temps. We did carry water with us and left it 3 miles in by Providence HS...but that meant a 6 mile stretch in the middle without water. We just need to go drop a bottle at the midway point (down by Redwood/Camp Williams Rd).

Okay, so what is your best medicine for PF? I gave myself a pretty good tear at DesNews and am trying to recover. I haven't run all week and it is getting significantly better each day, but I'm frustrated. Any good tricks you found? Anything that is helping you now? How long did it last? Can you tell I'm in the guessing stage right now? :)

From Wilkerk on Fri, Aug 03, 2012 at 01:48:16 from 67.172.231.174

Honestly it has taken since March to finally feel like I'm getting on top of this. A few setbacks. I wear a simple splint at night. Roll and rub my heal quite vigorously...massage from time to time helps. Stretching foot/calf in morning and after running. I have gone back to a more elevated heal shoe (more heel to toe drop) with simple soft Dr Scholls arch supports in my running and casual/ work shoes. I've also been told and read that this often doesn't entirely go away. Scott posted an article from Runners World I found helpful. I'll see if I can find that link.

I'm not sure there is one thing that solves this for everyone. Forums are full of all kinds of advice and stories of success and failure. I had to experiment with several things to find what was working. I'm also now doing some foot strengthening exercise as well.

Good luck!!

From RAD on Fri, Aug 03, 2012 at 08:14:14 from 98.202.23.178

I think that is what I'm finding. It is like anything else and what works for one doesn't always work for another.

Mine has healed up pretty nicely within a week and I think I should be okay to run (walking pain free) Monday, but I'm now really hesitant. My tear came on a morning things felt great and I really didn't have much PF to begin with anyway. It was just over 3 steps it hurt incredibly bad. Then, by the time I got home I was zero weight bearing on it. Crazy! I hope it was just a fluke thing, but now I'm so worried it could happen anytime.

I am taking the precautions you talked about as well as rolling and icing. I'm just getting sick of it already. Glad you are finally feeling like it is under control. You deserve to have a good SGM!

I agree on all accounts! I was back for the first longish run since the foot and didn't give a crap about pace and my legs certainly weren't what they used to be. BUT, I was just happy to be out!

Well, even next week. This week may be too much too soon for me, but next week would be good :) I'll be on the Blackridge course, so keep your eye out on the bikers! :) Do you run from your home to the canyon then back? It is 3 miles from my house to the gate, then I usually go up 4...can't take much more than that, it gets horribly steep then.

From Wilkerk on Tue, Aug 07, 2012 at 19:19:10 from 174.255.144.54

It just depends so last week I started at the gate and went up planned on just going up four, but ended up going all the way the top. That I took a little trail to the south for about a mile and a half. The trail at the top was the best part!

No, I never have taped my PT.

Glad I could help! I need some people to show up at 5 am to distract me from speedwork!

OK, positive thoughts from here on out. St George is going to be great!!!

Glad the PF is feeling good. Seriously, though, if it starts to bother you, KT TAPE!

We are going to run the Corridor first Saturday if you want to join for those 11 miles. The lady I am running with is probably only going to do 16-18, so we will break at my house at 11, decide how far from there, and then get back to running. Just a thought for ya!

18.26 on Jordan River Ttrail with Scott Stoddart

Wasn't sure what to expect after being awakened for the second time by thunderstorms through Friday night and early Saturday morning.  Last one was around 4 AM...when my alarm went off at 5AM I was again greeted by streaks of lightning and loud thunder...and rain.  So I texted Scott and started watching the radar...whew...looks like the main cell was moving through and on its way across the valley.  So after waiting a bit for things to dry out (mistake...we should have just taken off at 5:30 as planned) we hit the trail startting at 126th south and heading south.

HUMIDITY was the key word today.  I was literally dripping wet everywhere.  My shorts were dripping, my shirt soaked, my hat soaked and dripping.  The run felt pretty good for the first 10-11 miles.  We went 5 miles south to where they are working on the trail and rocks are piled up...but didn't want to run through the mud on the detour so we headed back at that point.  Quick refuel on Gaterade (gotta get used to it since that's what they use at SGM).  Then off to the North to River Oaks Golf course on 93rd then back.  I like this north route becasue there are lots of restrooms and drinking fountains.  On the way back my stomach was NOT good.  Cramps!  Then my PF started to really hurt...forgot to load up on ibuprofin before leaving.  So I struggled to get to 15 and the truck.

Scott headed off while I took a rest/pit stop...felt much better 5 minutes later!!! Yeah!!  So I started heading South, but the foot and then my calf started to really bother me.  I met up with Scott and headed back for 18.26.  Now I'm really wondering about SGM...gotta get some longer runs in and with 5 weeks to go...ugh!  This PF thing is just killing me!  It's felt so good for a few weeks and then bam!

Anyway great day with Scott and gorgeous run after the rainstorms.  We also passed Kelli a couple of times today...Kelli Siting!!!  :)

Later!

The second one is how I do it because I can do it without help. I do think the first link looks like it would hold a little better if you ave someone to help you do it. If you want to give it a try, I have a bunch of KT tape. When will you be at the gym? I will just make sure to have some with me today and tomorrow should I RUN into you.

you've got to work it on and then 'heat treat' it (rub it until warm, or use a heat pack) to get it to stick well. Otherwise, it will just pull off. You can also use rubbing alcohol to clean and dry your skin before hand.

Nice work on the speed! Dang!!

Activity Type: Street Running | Event Type: Race | Course: 2011 St. George Marathon
New PR and Boston Qualifier!!! Scott Stoddart too (3:11) Yay!! Jen Park also bested her qualifying time from last year.  Kelli went under 3 hours with an ubelievable 2:58!!  Rachel also hit 3:23!!  What a spectacular race and day. Tons of people out all over. Weather was just a little cooler than last year and it made a huge difference (checked and it was 8-9 degrees cooler in St George between 10-11AM this year compared to last). Stayed focused on the positive and on hitting my pace. Was still in the porta potty when the gun went off...long lines and we were in the 5:30 bus which is one of the last 10 or so. So I started about 4+ minutes behind the gun start which gave me lots of weaving and catching up to do those first couple of miles. No cramping this year...did water and gatorade at the aid stations and used polmagranate Honey Stinger chews for the first two carb doses...spread them out a bit as well. Then the next three were Cliff Blocks Margarita (3x sodium). Wore my Asics Gel DS Racer 9 shoes...first time i've run a marathon in anything that light...loved it. Had a 1 week old pair of new Adidas that I debated back and forth on, but finally decided to stick with the DS Racers. I'm now around 230 miles on them so they will probably be wearing down soon. I felt really quite good after this race...other than staggering around for a bit...I quickly got fluids and fuel in me (chocolate milk, water, fruit, roll and pulled pork from Texas Roadhouse, pop cicle, coke) Really didn't hit the wall on this one at all. Last year I hit it around mile 18 and it was a struggle the rest of the way. Wonder if this is mostly physical or mental because I had a completely different mindset going into it this year.
As for the race itself...felt good right from the start, but I will get there earlier next time...was stretching in the LONG potty line then in the potty as the gun sounded.  Had to fight my way across the traffic to drop my bag then back to get in. 4 minutes and 18 seconds behind the gun start meant I had some dodging and weaving to do those first two miles, but that could have been to my advantage as it forced me to not take off too fast at the start.  Anyway things were feeling pretty good and I kept doing mental things to keep me going.  Recited WAYFO speach several times (from the training I do) and that is packed with positive thoughts...especially "energy and action follow thought"  so I stuck to the positive all race.  "It takes great courage for an individual to go into an uncomfortable situation and stay focused on thier positive outcome until they succeed..." and on and on...good stuff.  I also targeted some of the ladies ahead of me to catch up to all the way through...picked on the ones wearing bright orange and bright pink...they were easy to spot from a couple of hundred yards and work my way up to.  :) Thanks brightly dressed ladies!  Last year by mile 18 I was toast!  This year there was a good sized crowd close to that area lining the street and I gave them some big cheers as I came through which caused a great reaction...got me pumped up and I exited the ledges (last up hill part) with a huge smile and a feeling I was plowing through this thing!  About mile 20-21 I watchd a couple of guys ahead of me peel off to the side and thought they were stretching...one was the other started vilantly vomiting as I passed and he was loosing a ton.  I hope he was okay...gotta be hard to keep hydrated after that!  Then it was on to the down hill stretches into St. George and more and more people cheering, kids passing out popsicles (i didn't stop for any...too focused, but I thought it was cool to see the community support) I was coming into the city a little behind my first targe pace of 7:37 at about 7:44 which I knew would get me under 3:25, but I wanted to get that down a little bit...so I kept pushing.  It felt like I was flying and occassionally I would see my pace in the 6 minute range, but by the end of the mile I would be back around 7:30.  Down that final stretch to the finish I was so focused on those balloons and the finish line that I didn't see any of my supporters.  I did manage a big cheer and yell for the crowd which once agian livened them up as they errupted with loud cheers!  Love to do that!  Of course there has to be that final sprint drama...I was coming in at a pretty good pace for me in the 6 minute/mile range and passing a few when one lady decided she didn't want to be passed...so we raced to the end :) 3:23:32 (3:23:26 on my Garmen and 26.3 miles...same as last year on the distance).  Yea!!! BQ!!!!!! PB by 11 minutes over last years 3:34!!!!!!!!
Post race analysis: I managed a negative split for the first time! I thought I had gone slower on those first two miles this year compared to last, but they were actually quite similar.  I did take Veyo slower this year which may have made recovery at the top quicker/easier to get going without as much lactate build up.

Such an awesome race Kim! Congrats on the BQ!!! It really was just a perfect morning, couldn't have asked for more. I had to laugh at the puking guy at mile 21...that was me last year :) I was glad to pass that spot and not look back! If you would've started with the crowd I could've been that girl that raced you to the finish :) Okay, you would've been just a bit in front of me, but I might've been able to keep up if it was you :)

Again, GREAT race! So proud of your accomplishment! Enjoy the week off, and bask in the light of your greatness! :)

Another great St George race!  1:32:58 PR...for me this one started fast and really never let up...taking advantage of the downhill sections.  Temps were cool (low 40s) at the start, but that was great once we started.  New PR...beating my old on set on this course in 2010.

Abby my 13 year old joined me and ran 2 miles on the TM and 3 miles on the bike...she laughed because some guy wanted to race me on the TM that was next to us...as tough as it was to let him run his 20 second 11 mph sprints I stuck to my plan.

That is a sweet 5K PR, but just getting edged out on a finish time like that? I might've tripped the guy...if my whole family wasn't watching :) Were you sprinting to the finish with him?

12.5 on the Mountain View Corridor this morning with Scott Stoddart.  Easy pace (9:15) which included stopping a few times to herd dear toward the exits so they wouldn't get hit.  Thought we were going to watch one get creamed by a truck...it was just a few feet from being road kill.  Without those stops we would have been more in the 8:30 range.

I am not sure I would call it great! was grumpy and I am never as talkative when I am grumpy!

I always feel bad that you take your earphones off when I show up---I hope you know that you can stay plugged in (I know how sometimes that is needed for motivation-especially during speedwork!) I will not be offended. As long as you say HI and BYE. ;o)

Ended up at 11 miles for some of us, 11.5 and 12 for others.  :) we had hot cocoa, chocolate milke, bagels (Einstein Brothers) chocolate, and fruit at my place.  What a fun time with good friends and a rather fun snowy run!  Thanks to my wife and girls for prepping and dropping some of us off at the gate...others drove with Jen...thanks Jen for driving!

Looking forward to our next group run...hopefully it's not a year away!

Cleaning assignment at the church this morning from 7-8:30...it was cold when I got up...mid teens so Scott Stoddart and I were planning to go to the Olymipc Oval and run.  Scott ran into some time issues so I joined Kelli and Scott S  on their HH run.  Luckily it had warmed all the way up to 23 when we started and kept warming to around 30 by the finish.  It wasn't bad other than a half mile when a brutal "in your face" wind hit us.  Zig zagging up the hill had me sucking air and Kelli and Scott don't stop!!! Had to chew down my Blocks on the run just west of Butterfield Park (a little past half way).  Overall it was a great run and good to be OUTSIDE for a change and not on the TM.  Thanks for the push Kelli and Scott!
